Salt in Hindu Mythology

Salt is regarded as the embodiment of goddess Lakshmi. Since Lakshmi and Vishnu reside in the pal kadal (the Sea of Milk, which is Vishnu's dwelling), and the majority of salt is sourced from the sea, Tamils view salt as a representation of Lakshmi.

In the past, before the proliferation of numerous grocery stores, it was common practice to ask neighbors for essential kitchen items when supplies ran low. However, it is frowned upon to request or exchange salt.

There are various cultural taboos, such as the belief that a salt container should never be completely emptied. Families are expected to replenish their salt supply before it runs out entirely. My mother explained that an empty salt container signifies the departure of Lakshmi, or wealth, from the home.

Traditionally, women were not entitled to own property. Nevertheless, due to cross-cousin marriages and the distinct bonds between brothers and sisters, married daughters can assert rights over possessions in their maternal homes when they visit. Typically, surplus oil, coconuts, or grains are given to the married daughter as she prepares to move in with her in-laws. However, it is thought that a married daughter should not take salt from her mother's house. This belief stems from the idea that the daughter herself is considered as Lakshmi, and taking salt would lead to dire poverty for the maternal household..

Moreover, there is a belief that salt should not be passed directly from one hand to another. If a family member requests salt while dining, it is advised not to hand it directly; instead, one should place the salt container down for others to help themselves. Transferring salt from one hand to another is thought to create discord between the individuals involved in the exchange.
