Taxation on one of the most common substance on earth - European Edition
A significant portion of the salt reserves found in the heartland of central and northern Europe were extracted from shallow deposits of ancient salt (Permian - Zechstein) or related brine sources. The major salt extraction hub in southern Bavaria, Reichenhall, was initially established during the Roman era but was later destroyed, possibly by Attila the Hun, though it's more probable it was the German Odoacer. It was reconstructed in the early 7th Century by Saint Rupert of Salzburg, who made it the property of the Bishop of Salzburg, who gained considerable wealth and influence from the salt business. Consequently, the "salt bishops" were elevated to the status of Archbishops by the "Mother Church." However, around 1190, a rival salt operation was set up in the vicinity of Berchtesgaden without the Archbishop’s consent, sparking a significant dispute between the Church and the State, with the Archbishop and the Emperor at odds. The Church was defeated, and in 1198, the saltworks in Bavaria were taken over by the Duke of Bavaria. Reichenhall's output reached its zenith around this period, but it eventually faced competition from new saltworks opened to the south by the determined Archbishops of Salzburg. Throughout the centuries, Reichenhall continued to be a key salt center for several more years and, even now, earns revenue from geotourism and the salt baths of Heilbaden.
