Shimmering in the dry terrain of Rajasthan, located southwest of Jaipur, the Sambhar Salt Lake stands as a striking example of nature's creativity. This extensive stretch of gleaming white salt, which is India’s largest inland salt lake, measures approximately 35.5 kilometers in length and varies in width from 3 to 11 kilometers. Its breathtaking views enchant visitors with its distinctive characteristics, rich heritage, and economic importance. In 1884, remnants of ancient sculpture art were uncovered in the region during minor excavation activities carried out at Sambhar Lake. This dig revealed various terracotta artifacts, coins, and seals alongside a clay stupa. The sculpture art from Sambhar seems to exhibit influences from Buddhism. Subsequently, around 1934, a comprehensive and scientific excavation was undertaken, resulting in the discovery of numerous terracotta figurines, stoneware, and ornamental discs. Several of these sculptures can be found at the Albert Hall Museum. The salt production from the lake was overseen by the Mughal empire, after which its ownership was divided between the princely states of Jaipur and Jodhpur. The Sambhar Salt Lake is the primary source of salt production for Rajasthan, generating 196,000 metric tons of refined salt annually, accounting for about 0.66% of India’s total salt output. Salt is harvested through the evaporation of brine and is predominantly managed by the Rajasthan government-operated company. The lake encompasses 3% of the eastern section. The company is facing challenges in meeting salt production demands, while private entities are yielding over ten times more than the company due to output from numerous illegal borewells, which are also significantly damaging the ecology of the salt lake.
