Researchers at a world class University have discovered a substance that could greatly lower costs and possibly facilitate the large-scale commercial manufacturing of silicon nanostructures—materials with immense potential across various fields, including electronics, biomedicine, and energy storage. This remarkable substance is none other than table salt.

Common sodium chloride, typically found in a salt shaker, has been shown to address a crucial challenge in the fabrication of silicon nanostructures, as reported in the journal Scientific Reports. By melting and absorbing heat at a vital stage during a "magnesiothermic reaction," the salt helps maintain the integrity of the valuable nanostructures that scientists are working to produce. The liquid salt can easily be removed by dissolving it in water, and it can be reused. This concept, notable for its simplicity, is expected to pave the way for broader applications of these extraordinary materials that have inspired scientific exploration globally.

"This could be the catalyst for launching a significant new industry," stated an assistant professor of chemistry at a prestigious western university. "Current methods for creating silicon nanostructures are expensive and yield only small quantities. Utilizing salt as a heat scavenger in this approach should enable the production of high-quality silicon nanostructures in large volumes at a fraction of the cost," he explained. "If we can reduce expenses sufficiently, many new applications might emerge."
