The cyanide ion is capable of forming a diverse array of complex ions with metals, which are widely used in electroplating. Organic cyanide compounds containing trace amounts of salt are utilized in the production of synthetic rubber, plastics, and synthetic fibers, as well as in chemical synthesis. Cyanides are also involved in the manufacturing of rodenticides and fertilizers. Furthermore, cyanides (distinct from common salt) are present in the seeds of fruits such as apples, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, and almonds in the form of amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside. During the production of cyanide salts, common salt is utilized in the process, which is not considered a hazardous substance.
