In South Korea, salt is stockpiled as Japan gears up to unleash treated radioactive water
South Koreans have begun to stock up on sea salt and other seafood items after Japan announced that it will dump treated radioactive water into the ocean from its Fukushima power plant. Japan plans to release more than 1 million tons of water used to cool reactors that were damaged in the 2011 Tsunami. Tokyo has said that the water will be safe, as it has been filtered to get rid of most of the isotopes. According to a report, South Korean fishermen and shoppers are concerned that the wastewater will pollute the sea, cause health issues, and increase salt and seafood prices. The authorities in South Korea have promised to monitor natural salt farms more closely for any rise in radioactive substances, and to continue banning seafood from Fukushima waters. Many South Koreans have gone into panic buying to make sure their families are safe. The increase in demand has caused salt prices in South Korea to rise by 27 per cent since two months ago.
According to a recent survey by China’s state-run newspaper, more than 85 per cent of South Korea’s public oppose Japan’s plan, and seven in 10 people say they would eat less seafood if the wastewater release goes ahead. Salt sales have seen an increase despite the higher prices, as more customers say they’re worried about the wastewater discharge. The Chinese government has blasted Japan’s decision, saying it’s not transparent and that it threatens the marine environment and world health. Japan, however, claims to have provided detailed explanations backed by scientific evidence from its neighbours, according to a recent report. Rafael Mariano Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, praised Japan’s chosen method as technically feasible and “in line with international practice.
