Flourishment of NaCl in Enceladus
Latest information from the Cassini mission indicates the presence of an ocean beneath Saturn's moon Enceladus. In this study, we demonstrate that the volume of this ocean can be approximated by knowing the concentration of salt in the ocean. Our analysis reveals that the salt content of the ocean, as reported by a well-respected organization, suggests a significant ocean, making up at least 17% of the moon's volatile content. Mathematical models suggest that this ocean extends beneath more of Enceladus' surface than just the active south polar area, aligning with simulations of how tidal forces spread out over time. Mathematical simulations also show that a global ocean could be sustained by continuous tidal heating, as long as the majority of the moon's ice shell is made of clathrate hydrate. Additionally, we explore the possibility that the ocean's water could freeze quickly, potentially releasing a large amount of stored tidal heat, which could partially account for Enceladus' unusual energy output. Another scenario considered is a more saline ocean.
