Like the healing power of seawater, salt can also help remove toxins from the skin and treat acne-related issues. Sea salt contains trace minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, and calcium. It’s also antibacterial and surprisingly soothing, which is why so many people claim that salt baths can help with their skin problems. However, there are no clinical studies to prove any of these claims, so it’s hard to say for sure. On a chemical level, salt makes soap really hard, which means it also makes soap last longer. That’s why many soap makers add a tiny amount of salt, which also helps to unmold the soap bars.

However, salt kills the lather, so you will never get a big, bubbly lather out of a salt soap bar. Instead, it brings its own unique flavor to the mix, creating a smooth, silky, lotion-like feel. Most salt soap will contain 50-100% of the weight in salt. Yes, you read that right. A batch of soap made with 500g of oils will contain 250-500g of salt. This makes for an incredibly dense bar that is truly one-of-a-kind. You may think salt soap will scratch or exfoliate your skin, but that’s not the case. Salt dissolves quickly in warm water when lathering, so there’s very little texture as you use it. Unless you use coarse salt, in which case it may feel a bit uncomfortable on your skin.

The hardness of water is determined by the dissolved salts and minerals in water. If the soap solution is made with hard water, the soap scum will form because the metallic ions in the hard water react with the free fatty acids in the soap. As a result, the soap solution loses its cleansing power and becomes cloudy. Industrial salt is used to make soap solutions harder.
