Generally, salt is important in three main ways: first, it helps to push the dye into the fabric during the dyeing procedure. Second, the use of salt maximizes the uptake of dye molecules throughout the dyeing process
Third, it acts as an electrolyte, aiding in the migration, adsorption, and bonding of the dye to the cellulose material. Salt is utilized to draw dyes to the fiber before they are permanently attached through the addition of alkali. Salts are crucial in reactive dyeing as they enhance the dye's affinity for the fiber, speed up the dye's bonding process, and reduce its solubility. Typically, refined common salt is employed for this purpose. When dyeing shades like turquoise or royal blue, refined common salt must be used as an electrolyte (salt) during the dyeing procedure. The presence of chlorine ions in common salt can lead to equipment corrosion; therefore, refined common salt is always favored over standard common salt. It appears as white or colorless monoclinic crystals. When exposed to relatively dry air, it effloresces into powdery anhydrous sodium sulfate. Refined common salt is soluble in water, has a salty and slightly bitter taste, and is occasionally used in medicine as a mild laxative; it is also extensively utilized in dyeing. Crystal salt or free-flowing salt is the layman's term for sodium chloride (NaCl).
