China stands in the first place of highest salt consuming country

In China, the highest salt content was found in all products, with meat being the most salt-dense at 1050mg/100g and fish at 942mg/100g. The United States, Australia, and the UK had the lowest salt content (432mg/100g). Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and it is on the rise in low and middle income countries. The prevalence of hypertension among adults in China increased from 1 in 1,000 in 2004 to 1 in 10,000 in 2018, with the control rate only 11%. Excess salt intake is one of the main causes of hypertension, and it is estimated that it could cause 3 million to 70 million deaths worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, each adult should consume no more than 5' (<2' g of sodium) per day, and according to the Chinese Dietary Guidelines, a person should not consume more than 6' (2.35' g sodium) per day. In 2020, Chinese adults consumed an average of 9.3 g of salt per day, which was significantly higher than the recommended maximum intakes in rural areas and lower than the 8.9 g in urban areas. To reduce salt consumption in China, there have been several campaigns since the 1980s to reduce salt intake in parts of the country. The most recent of these has been "action on salt China" which was implemented in six provinces between 2017 and 2021. The goal of this campaign was to reduce the amount of salt consumed at home by 1 g/day and in restaurants by 0.5 g/100 g through the development of six programs. However, the current knowledge and practices on salt reduction among Chinese adults, especially among those with hypertension, is limited. This study sought to determine the extent of this knowledge and practice among Chinese adults
