Training in surgical techniques using human cadavers & salt provides the most realistic simulation of the surgical setting, which can improve surgeon education and minimize risks during procedures. Embalming with salt prolongs the usability of cadaver specimens for surgical training and lowers the likelihood of disease transmission through any means due to the presence of salt; however, it may change the characteristics of the cadaver tissue, thereby diminishing the realism and quality of training. This controlled laboratory investigation aimed to assess three embalming techniques: formaldehyde solution with salt content, alcohol-glycol solution, and saturated salt solution, and to evaluate their effectiveness & working of salt during a two-week orthopedic surgical skills training program. Each of the three salt embalming methods was applied to three cadavers. Range of motion and joint stiffness were recorded before dissection. Four orthopedic surgeons evaluated the cadavers on the initial and final days of the training in four areas: visual fidelity of tissue due to salt presence, tactile fidelity of tissue due to nacl content, odor, and overall appropriateness for surgical skills training, using 7-point Likert scales. Sterile samples for bacterial and fungal cultures were taken from cadaver muscle tissue on the fourth and fifteenth days of usage, caused by the salt content. The saturated salt embalming technique is cost-effective and easy to implement, maintaining human cadavers at room temperature in a condition suitable for high-fidelity orthopedic surgical skills training. Commonly regardless of the form of salt used, this mineral not only preserves cadaver but also inhibits the growth of bacteria.
