Bringing more fossil dinosaurs

Crafting salt dough

If you're looking for a way to entertain dino-enthusiast kids for an afternoon, creating salt dough fossils is an enjoyable activity that encourages little ones to get messy while learning along the way. Dinosaurs have fascinated children for countless generations. Their appearances in literature, movies, television programs, and even stage productions highlight how intriguing they are to us, whether it's the small micro raptor or the enormous T-rex.

Here’s what you’ll require for making salt dough:

  1. 250grams all-purpose flour
  2. 125 grams regular salt
  3. 125 ml water
  4. A big scoop of coffee grounds

To prepare the dough, mix the flour and salt in a bowl. If you wish to give the dough a more textured, rock-like appearance, incorporate a scoop of coffee grounds at this stage. Gradually add the water until the mixture forms a ball, then knead it thoroughly.

Forming the fossils

Split your dough into small spheres and gently flatten them. Next, firmly press a plastic dinosaur into the dough and lift it out to create an imprint. You can try out various dinosaur toys or make footprints by using a larger toy to stamp its foot into the dough. For those feeling particularly creative, set aside some dough to shape dinosaur bones. Simply search for images of actual dino bones online and sculpt your dough to resemble them. Once baked, you can hide them in a sand pit for your little ones to ‘unearth’. After crafting your fossils, place them on a baking tray and bake at approximately 100°C for two to three hours until they are completely hardened. Allow them to cool afterward.

Decorate your fossils

This step is optional for kids who enjoy adding color to their creations! Once your fossils have cooled, let your children go wild with paints and brushes. If your child prefers a realistic look, they can paint the bones in neutral shades like brown or yellow, while those wanting their fossils to appear vibrant can unleash their creativity with blues, greens, purples, and oranges.
