Making of Salt Potpourri

Since ancient times, people have used potpourri in rooms in many different ways, including simply scattering it onto the floor. Early in the 17th century in France, people gathered herbs and flowers in the spring and summer. They left the herbs to go limp for a few days, then added coarse sea salt to the aging mixture. As layers were added, the mixture would often ferment or mold over the summer. In the fall, spices were added to the grey, unsightly mixture until a pleasant scent was achieved. Scent preserving fixatives were then added to the mixture. The potpourri would then be set out in pots with a perforated lid to be used in perfume rooms. A lot of potpourri today consists of any decorated dried plant material, not necessarily scented plants. The fragrance is often strong natural or synthetic perfumes, often with colored dyes, and the scent often does not match the plant material. In some cases, non-scented items are mixed with potpourri to increase its bulk and make it more attractive. You can spray scents on potpourri, but you need a fixative to absorb the scent for slow release. Orris root is a popular fixative for this.
