World salt Awareness Week

The World Salt Awareness Week runs from May 13 to 19 each year. During this week, doctors urged people to reduce their intake of sodium, which is linked to a variety of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart and kidney disease. According to the WHO, the goal of World Salt Awareness Week is to promote evidence-based measures to reduce salt consumption among the general public in order to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of many other diseases. This year's theme is ‘Time to Shine the Light on Salt’,’ which highlights the ‘hidden salt’ that is found in many processed foods. In some countries, about three-quarters of the sodium in a person’s diet is found in ultra-processed foods. A 5% Daily Value (DV) is a low daily sodium serving, while a 20% Daily Value is a high daily sodium serving

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the recommended daily value (DV) of salt is 5g/day, which is about 1/3 of a teaspoon. Doctors have highlighted ultra-processed foods as the main source of excess salt intake. Dr Shiva Raju K who heads the Medicine department at one of the leading private hospitals, explained that when talking about salt intake, it is important to distinguish between visible and invisible salt intake. "We can control the visible salt intake by limiting the amount of salt used in cooking, but we cannot control the invisible salt intake," he said. "Ultra processed, packed food, street and junk food are the main sources of salt consumption, and we unknowingly consume more salt through them." Dr Raju also highlighted the prevalence of childhood obesity and hypertension in the age group of 10-15 years, as well as the need for regular BP check-ups, especially for those with family history of hypertension

Doctors said that it is essential to reduce salt intake in the diet in order to maintain a healthy blood pressure and reduce the risk of hypertension and BP. Excessive salt intake can cause long-term health problems, including heart and kidney problems. Many people with hypertension and BP develop cardiovascular diseases if they do not limit their salt intake, which can be caused by a variety of factors, such as poor diet and sedentary lifestyles. In addition, 80% of patients with hypertension and BP end up becoming heart patients in the future. The age at which hypertension and BP occur is also decreasing, with more young people in their early 20s being affected. Dr. Jain emphasized on the importance of the DASH approach, which is a diet-based approach to stop hypertension, as well as the importance of diet and exercise on a daily basis
