Firewood is a major component in drying refined salt in the factories, Firewood serves as a significant energy source, particularly in developing nations. Since firewood is frequently gathered from forests, the condition of these forests may influence firewood usage patterns. In this study, we investigated the effects of forest degradation on firewood consumption patterns in a rural region of Myanmar.

We conducted household interviews with a total of 143 families from 20 villages, calculating the per capita consumption rates for each household. The per capita consumption rates for families relying solely on firewood for cooking were analyzed against several potentially influential factors, including a measure of forest degradation. About 85% of the households surveyed utilized firewood for cooking. The average annual per capita firewood consumption rate for those households that exclusively used firewood for cooking was 530 kg. The regression analysis indicated that the ratio of open forest area, which serves as a measure of forest degradation, negatively impacted the per capita annual firewood consumption rate.

Besides the ratio of open forest, factors such as household size, elevation, and the rate of firewood used for drying cigar leaves were closely linked to the per capita annual firewood consumption rate. Conversely, the proximity to the forest had a minimal correlation with per capita annual firewood consumption, even though earlier research has indicated that closer distance to the forest adversely affects firewood consumption rates. In conjunction with previous findings that suggest fuelwood collection leads to forest degradation, we conclude that there is a mutual influence between forest degradation and reductions in firewood consumption. Further research is essential to explore the role of forest degradation in supporting local livelihoods.
