Salt Lick in Africa
The Salt Lick is a region filled with small pools of water that are slowly fed by underground springs, historically serving as a watering hole for both wild and domestic animals. The saline water, which gradually emerges from beneath the earth, flows into the Gogo River. These salt licks can be found in both sedimentary and volcanic areas of bedrock. They are uncommon in areas of granite bedrock, except for those covered by calcium-rich glacial deposits. Well-known salt licks, such as Gogo, are visible as open muddy patches and are marked by well-trodden paths extending from them. Animals, including buffaloes, gazelles, zebras, and farm animals like cows, goats, and sheep, visit these salt licks to consume essential sodium and chloride minerals necessary for their survival. Gogo Salt Lick is situated in Mukuuri, close to the Gogo River that divides Mûkûûrî and Gitare at the base of a ridge named Mürurîrî. At least five acres along the Gogo River's edge, around the salt lick, have been set aside for communal use. The five-acre Gogo meadow, encircling the salt lick, is home to native trees. This area has been recognized as a salt source for centuries in the Embu region, dating back to the establishment of the Embu Community. In a 2005 publication by Kenyan historian and author Mwaniki Kabeca (10 August 1944 – 13 March 2023), it is mentioned that Gogo is the location where Mwenendega, the progenitor of the Embu tribe, encountered his wife, Nthara. Kabeca's account states that "Mwenendega," residing near the present-day Mwenendega grove in Runyenjes, brought his cattle to the Gogo Salt Lick and discovered a girl. The girl communicated with him and made him promise never to speak ill of her or mistreat her, warning him of the consequences if he broke his promise
