How salt affect Timber industry
Salt frequently contributes to the deterioration of construction materials found in cultural and historical edifices. The impact on aged timber within historical wooden structures had not been thoroughly examined until the 2010s. A representative historical wooden building expert from Asia was selected as the focus of the research. A range of chemical analyses was performed to assess and comprehend the salt-related damage to the aged wood using various techniques, including a scanning electron microscope paired with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The findings revealed the existence of invasive salt crystallization and ions within the aged specimens. The origin of these intrusive elements was determined by analyzing the type, quantity, and valency of the elements; they were identified as coming from environmental influences like acid rain and air pollutants. The distinct damage mechanism and pathway caused by salt in wooden historical buildings were summarized; the harm was linked to the buildup of sulfate salt leading to the hydrolysis of carbohydrates and salt crystallization that resulted in mechanical damage. This interdisciplinary investigation is crucial for guiding decisions in the preservation and assessment of historical wooden structures, as well as providing insights on utilizing wood as a building material in coastal regions and other salt harvesting areas
