Salt in lubricant

An elevated sodium concentration in oil raises alarms as it affects the oil's efficiency, leading to reduced productivity or potential equipment failure. If sodium levels exceed the recommended limits or show an upward trend, it is essential to take corrective measures. The oil analysis data from a leading company reveals the sodium content in the oil, offering operators a valuable insight into the internal condition of engines and machinery. According to an R&D manager from a well-known firm, high sodium levels can significantly increase the viscosity of the oil, making it less effective in terms of lubrication. Sodium can originate from various sources, including coolant, saltwater, additives, grease thickeners, base oils, dirt, and road salt. These sources are typically categorized into two groups - sodium as an additive or as a contaminant. "Detergents serve as a major additive. They are frequently included in engine oils to neutralize acids, such as sulfuric and nitric acids, generated in internal combustion engines during the combustion process," the manager explains. "Detergents help eliminate neutralization byproducts from metal surfaces and create a protective film, preventing sludge and varnish buildup at elevated temperatures." The manager points out that primary contaminant sources are coolants and antifreeze. "When oil analysis indicates high sodium levels, it could signify a coolant leak; however, if potassium levels are also elevated, it likely suggests antifreeze presence. Other crucial elements to monitor include boron, chromium, phosphorus, and silicon, which are linked to antifreeze and can indicate a coolant leak." Possible sources of leaks encompass faulty seals, electrochemical erosion, cavitation erosion, liner corrosion, damaged cooler cores, blown head gaskets, or cracked cylinder heads or blocks. "Increased sodium levels may also signify water contamination, causing the oil to shift from a clear appearance to a milky one," the manager states. "An analysis report highlighting moisture contamination is alarming as moisture can rust iron, accelerate corrosion on other metal surfaces, and degrade the lubricant."
