Tuticorin faced the most intense rain on 2023 December, Highest ever recorded in the last century.

Heavy rains in southern Tamil Nadu on Monday caused flooding in four districts, leading to the evacuation of people stranded in their homes and the setting up of relief centers in schools and marriage halls to provide shelter to over 7,000 people. At least three people died in the rain-related incidents, and three others are feared dead. The IMD has issued an alert for the districts of Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi for the next 24 hours. The Tamil Nadu government has declared a day of holiday for all educational institutions, private and public banks, and financial institutions in the four districts on Monday.

A passenger train from Tamilnadu's temple town to Chennai has been stranded for almost 20 hours due to floods in the area. The official said that all efforts are being made to rescue the passengers, and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has been alerted. A railway official said that a total of 800 passengers have been stranded, of which 500 are at the railway station and 300 are at a nearby school. The passengers were unable to get out of the station as the area was completely flooded. The train, Train No 20606, had left from the Tamilnadu temple town on December 17 to Chennai. However, it was stopped at a railway station located around 32 km from the town, due to heavy rains and flood.

Electricity was deliberately cut off ahead of the torrential rains. Cell phone networks were cut off in many areas. Public transportation services were disrupted, leading to major disruptions to everyday life. Many roads in southern Tamil Nadu were cut off due to flooded lakes and water-filled dams and reservoirs. The dams and reservoirs were filled to 80-100 percent of their maximum capacity. Rescuers are still in place in areas like Travancore junction and Tumkurthurai, mainly using boats. In Travancore district, around 36 villages were flooded. More than 50,000 people in flood-hit areas were provided with essential food.

The disaster response force teams, FRS and police are on the ground to provide food and water to the flood-stricken areas. The Navy has also taken part in the rescue operations in the state of Tamil Nadu. A helicopter of the Indian National Army's (INA) Parundu, located in the state of Ramanathamapuram, has saved 17 stranded persons, including 2 pregnant women. Another team from the Indian National Police's (INP) Kattabamman has also helped in the rescue operations and saved at least 25 persons. Also, the Coast Guard has deployed 6 disaster relief teams for the relief and rescue operations. While the rains have subsided in the state of Kerala and other southern areas, there has been no relief from the flooding. The government has extended the deadline for electricity consumption charges in the four districts to January 2, 2023 and clarified that no fine would be imposed. Dry food materials have been brought from the Air Force's Sulur air force base for distribution in the flood-affected areas. Food packets will also be dropped in the areas where the rains have caused floods. State Ministers, including Union Minister for Youth Welfare, Secretary Udhayan.
