Salt-Air Pt 1

While ocean living offers stunning views, salt air can wreak havoc on your home. So, if you're thinking of relocating to a coastal town, it's important to do your homework and consult with a realtor who knows the ins and outs of coastal living. If you've been living there for a while and are just beginning to see the effects, it's a good idea to review what other problems could be on your horizon. Salt, which is suspended in moist air, is highly corrosive. It penetrates a wide range of materials and sticks to them quickly.
This is something you don't want to happen to the structural components of your house, business, or any other building. According to galvanic corrosion studies, ocean air corrods metal up to 10x faster than air found inland. The effects of salt air corroding metal can be felt as far away as 50 miles inland. This part of beach life accelerates normal processes such as metal rusting and damage to wood. Unfortunately, this aspect of beach life accelerates the normal corrosion of metal and wood and can cause damage to your home if left unchecked. According to galvanic corrosion research, ocean air can corrode metal up to ten times faster than air found in landlocked areas

Deterioration of wood

Delignification, also known as lignification, is the process by which wood is broken down by the natural polymer lignin. Lignin is a type of polymer that binds the wood fibers together. Lignin provides the cell walls of wood with strength and stability. When the wood comes into contact with salt air or salt-laden water, the natural lignin reacts with the salt ions. The lignin then breaks down into smaller molecules that are soluble in water. This process can cause the wood fibers to break down, weakening them and making them more vulnerable to damage caused by weather, erosion, insects, and other factors. Delignification can also cause the wood to become darker and more likely to become discolored and stained.

In order to avoid the deterioration of wood caused by salt air, wood surfaces must be protected from exposure to salt water or salt-rich air. This can be accomplished by regular cleaning and maintenance of wood surfaces, application of protective coatings and seals, and avoidance of exposure to sea water and coastal environments.
