Molten Salt is a type of salt that's solid at room temperature and pressure, but is liquid at higher temperatures. A liquid salt that is liquid at room temperature and high pressure is usually referred to as a room temperature ionic liquid. In addition to solar and wind energy, some clean energy companies are exploring the potential of molten salt to generate electricity.

To be more precise, several companies are attempting to demonstrate that molten salt can produce electricity at the same level as solar and wind power. For example, in 2015, the US solar energy company Crescent Dunes brought online its 110 MW solar energy facility, providing 1,100 MW of energy storage and powering 75,000 home in urban areas. Crescent Dunes and other CSP projects are planned in South Australia, Africa and Chile, as well as in other parts of the world.

Unlike solar and wind, which can run on fossil fuels when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing, facilities that use molten salt can run at any time and can store power for up to ten hours. The process of molten salt power is straightforward: sunlight is focused onto a tower through a series of mirrors, which heats the molten salt inside the tower to more than one thousand degrees Fahrenheit. The molten salt is then used to produce steam, which can be used to turn a turbine and generate electricity

The cost of molten salt facilities is also much lower than other types of power generation. For example, in one US state, the Crescent Dunes power plant can generate electricity for as little as $0.07 per kWh, according to a recent report by the European Energy Agency (Energy Agency). The cost is expected to drop even lower in the coming years
