In ancient period, Salt in forms of hard salt slabs were a major trade goods of western part of africa These hard salt slabs were transported between places via camel-caravans and also by water transportation method(Boat) in Niger river & Senegal river. These salt slabs were sent down to south africa usually in exchange for cereals, ivory, copper, gold dust from mines in the southern part of the country, iron etc. Salt was such a commodity which was considered highly precious.
